Dear Parents:

Stevenson-Britannia School is continuing our summer reading project this year.  We have partnered with “First Book Canada” to purchase books for you. Research shows that students can lose skills they have learned during the past year if they do not read daily over the summer. This is referred to as the “summer slide”. We want to help you to “battle” against the “summer slide” this year.

Every student from Kindergarten to Grade 5 has chosen stories to take home to read with you. These are your books to keep! There is no expectation for you to return these books in the fall. Feel free to give the books to others when you are finished with them. If at the end of the summer you would like to return/exchange these, or other books you have at home, bring them to school. We have a new Little Free Library out in front of the school, as well as a Parent Book Exchange out in front of the office at our Parent Corner.
Here is a brief video with some helpful tips for summer reading:

Wishing you the best for a fun and safe summer holiday. Happy Reading!

Family Cultural Celebration Day Success

Thank you to all our families for sharing a game/activity/song/dance with us today from your family's cultural background so that we can all better understand each other and learn how much the same we all really are. We had a great day together, learning lots of new music, dances, languages, and ideas from each other.
Thank you also to our families for sending in so much delicious food to try! Everyone tried some different foods, and many of us had seconds!
We are so fortunate at Stevenson to have so many different cultures to share. It is a very valuable experience for all of us to learn about each other's history, traditions, and backgrounds. This is what makes our country so great! Happy Canada 150 everyone!

Fundraiser for Payatas

A group of students called our Social Justice Club decided to take action to help a community in need:

Over 30,000 people live in a huge garbage dump called Payatas in the Philippines (close to Manila). They scavenge through the garbage to find recycled bits they can sell to make money for food and clothing, etc. Kids don't go to school, they need to help families scavenge to make money. And it costs too much.

A British fellow (Roy Moore) created an organization (Fair Play For All) to bring some fun and joy into the lives of the children. He started by teaching them soccer in their free time, then made a competitive team (some of the players were recruited to play on national teams), and he now trains athletes to become coaches (as coaches, they are paid for their work and no longer have to scavenge and can help their families move out of poverty), he has opened a local "café" serving healthy food to the community and has started to open a free school.

The social justice team wanted to do a fundraiser for children of the Philippines since there are so many students at our school from the Philippines. We are doing the soccer tournament on June 22 as a fundraiser because of the theme of the organization.

Pledge forms were sent home with every student. Please return all funds raised and pledge form on Thursday, June 22. We appreciate any amount you can give to this worthy cause.

Thank you for your help.
